Bow Wow recently gave fans a rare look into how beats circulate in the music industry and revealed some unexpected stories.
During an interview with former NBA player Jeff Teague on the Club 520 podcast, Bow Wow was asked about songs he had passed on throughout his career. He first mentioned turning down the beat that eventually became Wale’s hit “Lotus Flower Bomb,” featuring Miguel. Bow Wow explained that he couldn’t find the right words when trying to write a song for that beat.
He also shared that producer Polow da Don accidentally sent him the beat for the song “John,” performed by Lil Wayne and Rick Ross on Tha Carter IV. This happened after Polow had already invited Gucci Mane to work on the track.
In a surprising revelation, Bow Wow said that he and Meek Mill had the beat for “Stay Schemin’” before Rick Ross, French Montana, and Drake turned it into a top 20 hit on the Hot Rap Songs chart. “We had the beat first,” Bow Wow said. “You can look it up on YouTube. Meek and I were in the studio in Miami working on the beat together.”
He added that beats being passed around like this is common in the music business. “It’s crazy how these beats get submitted to different artists and many of us end up with the same ones,” he said. “It’s cool for me to share these stories. There are many artists with similar stories that you wouldn’t believe.”
