LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cardi B is set to receive another major honor from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). The music industry group announced Wednesday that the Grammy-winning rapper will be awarded the Voice of the Culture Award at its upcoming ceremony.
The private event, which celebrates leading hip-hop, R&B, and gospel songwriters, will take place on June 8 in Los Angeles.
“Being recognized for the impact my songs have had on the culture means everything to me,” Cardi B said in a statement. “I’ve always wanted my platform and my music to stay true to who I am and inspire others to do the same, so this honor is especially meaningful.”
ASCAP gives the Voice of the Culture Award to members who make a strong impact on music and culture. The award honors creators who drive change and find success as artists. Usher received the award last year.
Cardi B has a history of breaking records with ASCAP. In 2020, she became the first woman to win back-to-back Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year Awards. So far, she has won 23 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.
She rose to fame with chart-topping hits like “Bodak Yellow,” “I Like It,” and “WAP.” Her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2019.
“Cardi B has left an indelible mark on hip-hop culture by challenging expectations for women,” said Paul Williams, ASCAP’s chairman and president. “With her bold honesty and talent, she has broken barriers and inspired others. Her voice continues to make a lasting impact.”
