Janet Jackson is finally receiving the recognition she deserves.
The singer, known for hits like “Rhythm Nation,” is enjoying renewed attention on Billboard charts thanks to her 2001 song “Someone to Call My Lover” going viral on TikTok. But her biggest honor came at the American Music Awards, where she received the prestigious Icon Award.
Since its introduction in 2013, the AMAs’ Icon Award has only been given twice before. It celebrates artists whose work has had a powerful impact on global pop music. Janet Jackson now joins music legends Rihanna and Lionel Richie in this exclusive group. Actress Tasha Smith presented the award to her.
In her acceptance speech, Jackson said, “I am so, so honored and grateful. I don’t consider myself an icon. For my family and me, it was never about fame. We always loved music, dancing, and singing. Fame came as a result of hard work and dedication.”
She also reflected on her family’s journey: “Our story is truly an American story. This kind of success could only happen in America. I hope that I have inspired others and fellow artists.”
Jennifer Lopez introduced Jackson’s performance. On May 26, Jackson took the stage and performed “Someone to Call My Lover” and “All For You.” This marked her first televised live performance since the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.
Jackson’s long career has seen its share of challenges. In 2004, during the Super Bowl halftime show, Justin Timberlake accidentally tore part of her costume, exposing her breast. While Timberlake faced little backlash, Jackson was heavily criticized, and many called it a “wardrobe malfunction,” suspecting it was staged for publicity. As a result, CBS’s parent company Viacom and its affiliates MTV and Infinity Broadcasting blacklisted her and her music. Her career was also affected by allegations of child sex abuse against her late brother, Michael Jackson, which added to the difficulties she faced.
Despite these obstacles, Janet Jackson’s impact on music remains undeniable, and her Icon Award is a powerful acknowledgment of her influence.
