Myles Smith Talks About Challenges of Organizing Pop-Up Show in Sydney

by Patria

British singer-songwriter Myles Smith played a free pop-up concert at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt on 8 May. However, that location was not his first choice.

Smith is currently in Australia for his We Were Never Strangers tour, which was originally scheduled for November 2024 but was moved to May. As part of the tour, he has hosted several surprise performances, including a free show in Melbourne’s Federation Square and an impromptu set in Brisbane.

His original plan was to perform a casual street set at Pitt Street Mall in Sydney. However, he reportedly faced resistance from the City of Sydney council. According to The Daily Telegraph, Smith was informed he needed a busking license, proper identification, and had to queue alongside other performers from 7 am to secure a spot. This proved difficult, especially as he had a sold-out show at the Hordern Pavilion that same evening.

Instead, Smith performed at the Opera House Forecourt. After the performance, he shared his thoughts on Instagram Stories on 10 May.

“It’s kinda crazy how hard it can be sometimes to just play a couple songs on the street,” Smith wrote. “Like, I get it… there needs to be some sort of system so it’s fair for everyone, whether you’ve got no followers or a million. That’s important.”

He added, “But still… it’s mad how something so simple can feel so complicated to actually make happen. How do we keep it fair and still make space for these moments to happen more often? How do we keep live music alive, not just on big stages, but in the places we actually live?”

He concluded by saying, “No real answers… just one of those things that’s been on my mind today.”

In contrast to the difficulties in Sydney, Smith’s request to perform at Melbourne’s Federation Square was reportedly approved in just 15 minutes.

Smith is currently performing at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, with shows scheduled for both tonight and tomorrow. Before the concerts, he busked in Brisbane and gave fans a preview of a new song set to be released on 23 May. He will conclude the tour in Auckland at the Powerstation on Thursday.

The tour follows the release of Smith’s EP A Minute, which came out in November.
