Françoise Hardy, the celebrated French singer and iconic figure of the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 80. The news was confirmed by her son, musician Thomas Dutronc, who announced her death on Instagram with the heartfelt message, “Maman est partie,” meaning “mum is gone,” accompanied by a nostalgic photograph.

Hardy was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 2004. Despite initial successful treatment, her condition worsened in 2015, leading to an induced coma and subsequent cancer treatments. By 2021, as her health continued to decline, Hardy became an outspoken advocate for the legalization of euthanasia in France.

Hardy’s illustrious singing career began in 1961 when she signed with the record label Disques Vogue. Her breakthrough came in 1962 with the hit “Tous les garçons et les filles.” She continued to captivate audiences with songs like “Je Suis D’Accord,” “Le Temps de L’Amour,” “All Over the World”—her only UK Top 20 hit—and “Comment te Dire Adieu,” co-written by Serge Gainsbourg. Throughout her career, Hardy released over 30 albums, culminating with her 2018 record, Personne d’autre.

In 1963, Hardy represented Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in fifth place. Her unique style and musical talent won her admiration from contemporaries such as Mick Jagger, who described her as the “ideal woman,” and Bob Dylan, who penned several love letters to her.

Beyond her music, Hardy was a fashion muse, inspiring designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne. She also made her mark in the film industry, appearing in movies such as Grand Prix, Château en Suède, and Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin féminin.

In her personal life, Hardy married French singer-songwriter Jacques Dutronc in 1981. Though they separated in 1988, she is survived by him and their son, Thomas.

Françoise Hardy’s legacy as a pioneering artist and beloved cultural icon will be remembered and cherished by fans worldwide.
