BUCKCHERRY’s STEVIE D.: ‘One of the Last Rock Bands with Double-Platinum Sales’

In a recent interview with Peter Kerr of Rock Daydream Nation, BUCKCHERRY guitarist Stevie Dacanay, also known as Stevie D., spoke about the success of the band’s 2005 album 15. The album featured hit singles like “Crazy Bitch” and “Sorry” and was eventually certified double platinum in the U.S., selling over two million copies.

Stevie D. told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that if he knew why the album was so successful, the band would have hits like that on every album. He said, “I think we were one of the last, if not the last, rock and roll bands to reach double-platinum sales.” He added that after that time, streaming became the main way people consumed music. “The only ones making money after that were the record companies,” he explained. According to him, artists were no longer part of the earnings. He said music videos became just advertisements for live shows. “Bands record albums and put out videos, but now they mainly release singles and videos as ads to get people to come to concerts,” he said. Stevie D. also noted that record deals changed. “Bands used to get signed for $500,000 or more, but now it’s much less, if they get signed at all.”

When asked if BUCKCHERRY has fans across different age groups in the U.S., Stevie D. said rock music still has its audience, despite reports that “rock is dead.” He observed that many fans moved to country music, which he said has become very rock-influenced. He added that fewer young people attend BUCKCHERRY shows, but younger fans have been coming more in recent years. “We are an older band, so a lot of our fans are longtime supporters,” he said.

BUCKCHERRY is set to release their eleventh album, Roar Like Thunder, on June 13. Like their 2023 album Vol. 10 and 2021’s Hellbound, the new record was made in Nashville at Sienna Studios. It was produced by Marti Frederiksen, a songwriter and producer who has worked with artists such as AEROSMITH, DEF LEPPARD, Jonny Lang, and Sheryl Crow. The 10 tracks were written by BUCKCHERRY’s singer Josh Todd, Stevie Dacanay, and Frederiksen.

The album will be released by Round Hill Records in North America, Sony Japan in Japan, and Earache Records in the rest of the world.

Vol. 10, released in June 2023, featured 10 original songs and a bonus cover of Bryan Adams’ classic “Summer of ’69.” In November 2023, the band also released a new holiday song titled “Tell ’Em It’s Christmas.” BUCKCHERRY had previously released another holiday track called “Christmas Is Here” in 2010.

In 2020, BUCKCHERRY added guitarist Billy Rowe from JETBOY. He replaced Kevin Roentgen, who left the band that July. In 2019, Francis Ruiz joined as the new drummer, replacing Sean Winchester, who left after recording drums on the album Warpaint.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of 15, BUCKCHERRY released a deluxe edition of the album on January 17 via Endurance Music Group. The album was originally released in 2005 and included the four-times-platinum single “Crazy Bitch” and the two-times-platinum single “Sorry.” The deluxe edition came out in North America on a two-vinyl-LP set. It features the original 11 songs, four bonus tracks from 2005, and three newly recorded acoustic tracks by Josh Todd and Stevie Dacanay.
