The Stay With Me singer, who uses they/them pronouns, was presented with the award by Lena Dunham at London’s Royal Albert Hall in recognition of her avant-garde style and support for British designers.

Sam, 31, walked the red carpet in a custom Vivienne Westwood blazer, miniskirt and platform heels. She later changed into a dramatic black taffeta gown with puffed shoulders to accept the award.

At the ceremony, which serves as the main fundraiser for the British Fashion Council, they also performed their song HIM.

Speaking about Sam’s award, Caroline Rush, Chief Executive Officer of the British Fashion Council, said she was “a true cultural innovator who has fearlessly pushed the boundaries of both fashion and entertainment”.

She added, “Smith’s unapologetic and groundbreaking style choices have dominated the industry in 2023 and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support of British designers.”

Other winners on the night were Michaela Coel, who was the recipient of the Leader of Change award, and Paloma Elsesser, who was crowned model of the year.

Meanwhile, outgoing British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful was presented with the Trailblazer Award, former Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton received a Special Recognition Award and Valentino Garavani, founder of Valentino, was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award.
