Kokoroko has released a new single titled “Closer To Me.”
The London-based group is often described as rooted in afrobeat and highlife music. However, their sound is more complex and layered than these labels suggest.
Their upcoming album, “Tuff Times Never Last,” will be released on July 11th. This new record expands their musical range while staying true to their core style.
Produced by Miles James, the single “Closer To Me” has a relaxed, head-nodding rhythm. The skillful horn playing gives it a neo-soul feel, and the laid-back beat reminds listeners of Common’s music during his peak in the early 2000s.
Co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth explains, “‘Closer To Me’ is a hip-hop record at its core. Even though it doesn’t feature rapping, the drums, sampling, and overall vibe reflect classic hip-hop, like old Common tracks.”
You can listen to the single now.
Kokoroko will perform live at the O2 Academy Brixton in London on September 25th.
