Today has been intense in the ongoing feud between Joey Bada$$ and West Coast rappers. Daylyt is the latest artist to respond, adding fuel to the fire. ArtistslikeJoeyBada, Daylyt, Ray Vaughn, CJ FLY, Really Jae’Won, and Az Chike have all joined the fight. Although these rappers do not have the same fame as stars like Drake or Kendrick Lamar, this coast-to-coast rivalry has still been exciting to watch. Joey Bada$$ has shown particularly sharp lyricism. Many feel the New York rapper is leading in terms of performance.
Still, no one has been as active as Daylyt during this exchange. In the last five hours alone, he released three songs. Two of these came within just 30 minutes of each other.
His latest tracks, “ICANTHOLDYOUTHISA” and “WORDISBON,” show different sides of his style. “ICANTHOLDYOUTHISA” sounds chaotic, especially with its unusual sample of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” The lyrics in this song are not his strongest. On the other hand, “WORDISBON” stands out more. This track is a tribute to Capital Steez, a close friend of Joey Bada$$ and a fellow MC who helped start Pro Era. Capital Steez tragically died by suicide in 2012 at just 19 years old.
Daylyt previously made light of this tragedy on another track, rapping, “If the world knew what n****s knew about you, they would jump off a bridge too.”
However, this rap battle has always been about showing which hip-hop region is better. It is a reminder that despite the rivalry, these artists are more like brothers than enemies.
Daylyt acknowledges this in “WORDISBON” and even shows emotion near the end of the song. This could be his way of signaling an end to his part in the battle. If so, it is a meaningful way to bow out.
