Tim McGraw made a strong statement about country music focused on “tailgates and bikinis” during a recent interview on the TL’s Road House podcast.
On the May 21 episode of Tracy Lawrence’s podcast, the singer behind “I Like It, I Love It” discussed several topics, including his health and aging in the music industry. McGraw, 58, said, “I try to do fun songs every now and again. It’s harder the older you get to find a fun song and feel comfortable with it.”
He then boldly stated, “You don’t want to sing about tailgates and bikinis when you’re 58 years old. Occasionally you do, if the song’s right.”
Instead, McGraw said he prefers songs with meaningful messages, like his hits “Humble and Kind” and “Live Like You Were Dying.” He explained, “What song’s gonna make me learn something about myself? And what song can I sing that I interpret that’s believable? That’s the hardest thing. Because look, I’ve experimented with stuff, I’ve tried different things.”
Recently, McGraw announced he would return to the stage for the first time since he had to cancel his Standing Room Only tour in 2024 due to health problems.
“In close consultation with his doctors, Tim McGraw will undergo necessary orthopedic surgery on both knees this month due to an injury sustained on tour,” Sandia Resort & Casino said on Instagram in June. “Unfortunately, this will prevent him from performing any shows for the remainder of this year.”
Despite this, McGraw is scheduled to headline the Music City Rodeo at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on May 31.
