Young Posse, a five-member K-pop group, has made a comeback with a new album that blends cinematic storytelling with unique music.
Released on Sunday, the group’s special album Cold features seven tracks, including the title song and its accompanying music video. The video stars the members of Young Posse along with Taiwanese actor Jing Hua Tseng, and was filmed in Taiwan. It showcases vibrant color schemes and a visually captivating style.
“The album presents an unexpected storyline and atmosphere, which has surprised many. One comment that really resonated with me compared the music video to ice cream, saying it reflects how the world can be both cold and sweet,” said Sunhye, the group’s leader, at a press conference on Tuesday.
Yeonjung explained that the music video tells the story of two siblings, abandoned by their father, who seek revenge. “Jing Hua Tseng plays Oscar, the male lead, while Doeun and I play the female leads. I hope people enjoy the music, which complements the video’s storyline,” she added.
Doeun, who made her acting debut in the video, expressed gratitude toward her co-star. “This was my first time acting in a drama-style production, but Jing Hua Tseng helped me a lot by translating his lines into Korean and speaking in Korean throughout the shoot. It really helped calm my nerves.”
The title track, “Cold,” begins with an electric guitar riff inspired by modern rock, before expanding into an orchestral arrangement. The song explores themes of loneliness and emotional distance in relationships. Singer-songwriter 10CM, known for his distinctive voice, features on the track, adding depth to its melancholic mood.
The album also includes “Cold (YPS Colder ver.),” a version with a colder tone and a stronger focus on the group’s vocals. This track serves as the seventh and final one on the album, completing the emotional journey.
When asked why the album is considered a “special album,” Sunhye explained, “Unlike our previous releases, which focused on Young Posse’s own story, this album centers around the theme of ‘Cold.’ The members challenged themselves with the hip-hop ballad style of the title track. We plan to continue exploring new styles.”
Although the title track leans toward a hip-hop ballad, Doeun highlighted that the album still includes the intense hip-hop tracks Young Posse is known for. “I really hope people listen to all seven tracks and experience the variety of music in the album,” she said.
Though Young Posse debuted in October 2023, the group has already performed at several festivals, earning praise for their stage presence. Looking ahead, Sunhye shared the group’s ambitions: “We dream of performing at major music festivals like Coachella or Lollapalooza. Our goal this year is to grow into artists who can own those stages.”
