Dawes Covers Randy Newman’s ‘I Love L.A.’ to Support Fire Relief Efforts

by Barbara

Dawes has released a cover of Randy Newman’s iconic 1983 hit “I Love L.A.,” with all proceeds benefiting fire relief efforts in Los Angeles through the Recording Academy and MusiCares. The band’s rendition of the song, which they first performed at the Grammy Awards, features updated lyrics reflecting the city’s resilience in the face of recent disasters. Dawes was part of the opening ensemble at the event, alongside Sheryl Crow, Brittany Howard, Brad Paisley, John Legend, and St. Vincent.

The cover follows Dawes’ performance at the FireAid benefit concert, where they opened with their 2011 single “Time Spent in Los Angeles,” as L.A. landmarks were projected behind them. Some members of the band have been personally affected by the devastating California wildfires. Lead vocalist Taylor Goldsmith lost his home studio and equipment to the Eaton fire, while his brother Griffin, the band’s drummer, and former bassist Wylie Gelber also lost their homes in Altadena.

Goldsmith shared his perspective on the tragedy, acknowledging the immense loss while striving to stay positive. “This is a gnarly tragedy, and there’s no two ways around it,” Goldsmith said. “But at the same time, I just have to figure out a way to not let it suck me into the vortex.”

Dawes’ latest album, Oh Brother, released last fall, blends indie rock and heartfelt ballads. The band, which celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, is embracing new changes following the departure of bassist Wylie Gelber. “I love it when bands have new phases,” Goldsmith reflected, noting the change has reinvigorated the band. “If anything, it’s reinvigorated Griffin and I. It reminded us, ‘Oh, we’re lifers.’ We don’t want to do anything else — we want to do this.”

The “I Love L.A.” cover and Dawes’ ongoing efforts underscore their dedication to supporting the local community while navigating their own personal challenges.
