Luke Combs has introduced another soul-stirring ballad, “Wish Upon a Whiskey,” during his ongoing tour of Australia and New Zealand. The piano-driven track is expected to appear on the country music star’s upcoming studio album.
In “Wish Upon a Whiskey,” Combs takes on the persona of a heartbroken ex, struggling to move on from a past relationship. The song explores the lengths he goes to in order to heal, including a poignant and clever turn of phrase. Rather than wishing on a star, Combs sings, “I gave up on a shooting star / It’d have to fall down way too far to fix this kind of feeling that I’m feelin’,” and ultimately turns to a bottle of Jack Daniels as his last resort for solace.
The powerful chorus showcases Combs’ signature raspy vocals as he captures the raw emotion of his lyrics: “I tried the back pew of that church / Read every chapter, every verse / But all my prayers they always hit the ceiling / So I do the only thing that don’t make me feel empty / Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey.”
With another unreleased track, “More Less Than Perfect,” recently shared ahead of his January and February tour dates, it’s clear Combs is preparing to announce a new album.
The country star will wrap up his Australian leg in Melbourne on February 7th and 8th, and fans are eagerly anticipating which new song he’ll debut next.
