Detroit Diamond rose to fame after her standout performance on season two of Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow, where she finished in fourth place. Since then, the Detroit native has been busy with interviews, performances, and travel. When Metro Times spoke with her in March, she was in the middle of a hectic schedule.
Now, Diamond is preparing for a major milestone — her first concert at El Club, scheduled for this Friday.
“I didn’t know I was going to have a concert, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said the Cody High School graduate. “It just came at the right time. I ended up meeting some good people at El Club.”
The show is called Rookie of the Year, the same name as her debut album released in January. The concert will also feature a 2000s theme.
“I want everyone to wear a jersey — like jersey dresses, sports jerseys, or custom outfits,” she said. “I just want people to feel that sense of nostalgia.”
Diamond says the audience can expect a full experience. She plans to perform 31 songs to celebrate her 31st birthday. She also hinted at surprise appearances from other Rhythm + Flow cast members.
“You’re going to get everything I have,” she said. “Real rap, a party vibe. It’s going to feel like a big karaoke night in your backyard.”
