BTS leader Kim Namjoon, known as RM, has made history by becoming the first Korean rapper to win the Favorite K-pop Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The ceremony took place Monday night in Las Vegas. RM, 30, beat other nominees including his bandmate Jimin, ATEEZ, BLACKPINK’s Rosé, and Stray Kids.

Although RM could not attend the event on May 26 due to his mandatory military service in South Korea, his win marks an important milestone for both his solo career and the wider K-pop industry. This award adds to his many achievements and strengthens his position as a leading figure in modern Korean music.

Since BTS announced a temporary break to focus on solo projects and fulfill military duties, RM’s musical growth has been remarkable. His thoughtful lyrics and mix of different music styles have connected deeply with fans around the world. RM’s skill in blending genres while keeping his unique voice shows he is more than just a member of the biggest boy band globally.

This recognition comes at a significant time, as fans look forward to BTS reuniting in June 2025 after all members complete their military service. The group’s pause has highlighted each member’s individual talents, with RM’s solo work proving his strength as a songwriter and producer.

RM’s win also reflects the teamwork that has always been central to BTS’s success. The group often says, “teamwork makes the dream work,” a motto that has guided them from their start in South Korea to worldwide fame. Even in solo careers, each member’s success reflects their shared strength.

The 2025 American Music Awards were largely led by Billie Eilish, who won all seven awards she was nominated for, including Artist of the Year. Other winners included SZA, who earned Favorite Female R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Song for “Saturn,” and the duo Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars for their hit “Die With a Smile.”

RM’s historic achievement shows K-pop’s growing global influence and its power to cross cultural borders. As the first Korean rapper to receive this award, RM has opened doors for future artists while continuing the creative spirit that brought BTS international success.

With BTS’s reunion just weeks away, RM’s American Music Awards win gives the group strong momentum as they prepare for their next chapter together.
