Trent Harmon, best known as the winner of American Idol Season 15, is stepping away from country music to return to his gospel roots. Harmon, who has spent nearly a decade in the country music scene, says his heart has always been in faith-based music.
The Mississippi-born singer recalled learning “Amazing Grace” at just five years old, thanks to his mother. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for music. Although his first big break didn’t come through The Voice—where no coach turned their chair—he stayed committed to his dream. He later auditioned for American Idol and ultimately won the show’s final season on Fox.
Throughout his career, Harmon found ways to include his Christian faith in his music. But even as he blended gospel elements into country songs, he admitted it never truly felt like home. In an interview with The Christian Post, he shared how his personal songwriting naturally shifted toward faith-based themes.
“I kept wanting to go do more shows that were more spirit-filled,” Harmon said. “I feel most at comfort whenever I’m playing songs that I know have a purpose, have a meaning behind them. I realized I was writing more and more faith-based stuff in my own time. These songs are the ones I wanted to end my show with. Then I kind of realized, I wanted my whole show to be these songs.”
A Defining Moment on Stage
Despite the uncertainty of changing genres, Harmon knew he was on the right path when he played a small church show that deeply moved him.
“It was a smaller church, but I didn’t care if it had been 2,000 or 200 people,” he said. “I just thought, ‘I feel comfortable doing this, man. I’m back to my roots. I’m playing the music that I know the words to. I’m not having to change any lyrics so that my mom won’t be upset if she sees it online later.’ I’m at peace with the songs and the music that I’m making right now.”
Harmon emphasized the importance of being proud of the music he performs both on stage and in the studio. His connection to gospel music even became clear to him while still competing on American Idol.
“I remember sitting around sharing songs with several contestants one night… and I played a worship song,” he said. “There was a different feeling in the room. I thought, ‘You know what? That left a mark tonight.’”
As Trent Harmon moves forward into gospel music, he hopes to inspire others through songs rooted in faith. While the future remains uncertain, he believes this return to his spiritual beginnings is where he belongs.
