Conductor Christopher Dragon Takes the Lead at Pops Podium

Former West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) associate conductor Christopher Dragon has secured a prominent new role in the United States, joining Philadelphia’s No Name Pops as its principal conductor.

“Philadelphia is a city with an incredible passion for music, arts, and culture—much like its legendary love for sports and history,” Dragon said in a statement. “The energy and enthusiasm of the community is inspiring, and I can’t wait to bring that same excitement to the concert hall.”

No Name Pops was formed in 2023 by musicians from the now-defunct Philly Pops, which ceased operations following the 2022-2023 season. The closure came after former financial controller Cheryl Lutts was convicted of embezzling more than $280,000 from the organization. Determined to preserve a musical tradition dating back to the 1940s, the musicians restructured under the new name.

Dragon’s appointment marks another milestone in his career. The Perth-born conductor previously served as Director of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and has been the Resident Conductor of the Colorado Symphony since the 2019/20 season. He initially joined the Colorado Symphony as Associate Conductor, holding the position for four seasons.

Australian audiences may recognize Dragon from his tenure with WASO, where he worked closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch during his three-year tenure as Assistant Conductor. A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Dragon started as a clarinetist in the WA Young Orchestra before embarking on a conducting career in 2011 after winning the WA Youth Orchestra’s Woodside Concerto Competition.

His training includes participation in the Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program under Christopher Seaman. He has also studied with renowned conductors such as Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Järvi at the Järvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival, and Jorma Panula.

“Christopher Dragon’s dynamic performances and engaging stage presence have established him as one of the most exciting young conductors in the industry,” a No Name Pops spokesperson said. “His commitment to making orchestral music accessible and exhilarating aligns perfectly with our mission to create unforgettable experiences for our audiences. We are honored to welcome him as he embarks on this new chapter with us.”
