Keith Urban recently returned to his roots in Tamworth, Australia, where he was honored with a place on the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame’s Roll of Renown—a moment he describes as surreal. The achievement came full circle for Urban, who as a young boy had begun his musical journey busking on Tamworth’s Peel Street.
Urban reflects on his journey, tracing it back to his early days when his father, recognizing his rhythmic talent, gifted him a toy ukulele at age four. By 1979, Urban was inspired by the sight of country music legend Slim Dusty being honored on the Roll of Renown, a moment that shaped his dreams. Many years later, Urban had the honor of recording a duet with Dusty, and now, he stands on the same prestigious board.
“It’s amazing,” Urban shared from Sydney, acknowledging the weight of the honor. “I remember when I was 10 or 11, waiting in line for Slim’s autograph. Twelve years later, I got to record with him and tour with him.”
Tamworth plays a pivotal role in Urban’s career, but so does Brisbane, the city where he honed his craft and played in cover bands to support his original music. He’ll return to Brisbane in August during his Australian tour, which kicks off in Newcastle on August 13 and includes stops in Wollongong, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
Urban recently gave fans a taste of his journey at a club show in Brisbane’s Lefty’s Music Hall, celebrating his new album High, which has garnered widespread acclaim.
