Nirvana’s surviving members—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—reunited on stage for a surprise set at the FireAid benefit concert, joined by an array of guest vocalists. The iconic band’s performance, which featured St. Vincent, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Joan Jett, and Grohl’s daughter Violet Grohl, quickly became the evening’s highlight.
This reunion marked the first time Nirvana has performed together in over a decade, with their last reunion in 2012 alongside Paul McCartney. It also marked a significant personal moment for Grohl, who had just publicly revealed the news of fathering a child out of wedlock in September 2024. The emotional climax of the set was Grohl’s daughter Violet joining the band for a poignant rendition of “All Apologies,” with Dave providing vocal harmonies towards the end.
While some guest performances, like St. Vincent’s rendition of “Breed” and Kim Gordon’s “School,” were met with mixed reactions, Joan Jett’s powerful take on “Territorial Pissings” stood out, proving she still has the punk-rock energy that made her legendary. Despite some rocky moments, Violet Grohl’s performance was a standout, adding a deeply touching layer to the reunion.
