Country music, rock, and roots music legend Joe Ely has revealed his upcoming album, Love & Freedom, set for release on February 7. Co-produced by fellow Texas legend Lloyd Maines, who also performs on six tracks, the album will be distributed by Rack ‘Em Records via Thirty Tigers.

In a statement about the album, Ely shared, “To me, ‘Love and Freedom’ is a reminder of the times we’re living in right now, and I hope it resonates with whoever takes the time to listen.”

The album’s sudden announcement on January 24 for a February 7 release raised some eyebrows, as the typical gap between announcement and release is usually six weeks to two months. Ely has also remained out of the public eye for an extended period, prompting concern among fans. On January 30, Ely’s wife and manager, Sharon Ely, took to social media to address these worries, revealing that Joe Ely has been dealing with serious health issues.

In addition to the album, Ely has been named one of the honorees for the 2025 American Music Honors, an award administered by Bruce Springsteen’s Archives & Center for American Music. Despite Ely’s significant impact on both rock and country music, his legacy has not been fully recognized in either genre. Springsteen personally called Ely to inform him that his six decades of contributions to American music were worthy of celebration.
