Texas-based rock band Blacktop Mojo is making waves with their unique blend of classic rock, sludge metal, and Southern influences, creating a sound they’ve coined “Texas Grunge.” Since their formation in 2012, the band has steadily gained recognition for their powerful musicality and raw, genre-hopping style.
Founded by vocalist Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, Blacktop Mojo was soon joined by bassist Matt Curtis and guitarists Malcolm Booher and Ryan Kiefer. Over the years, the band has continuously evolved, drawing from a diverse mix of genres to create a distinctive blend of heavy rock and soulful blues.
Their debut album, I Am, was released in 2014, and since then, the band has kept their creative energy alive, crafting songs that reflect both personal experiences and universal themes. With a sound that mixes modern appeal with a vintage rock sensibility, Blacktop Mojo’s slow but steady rise in popularity has been fueled by their authentic and captivating live performances.
Lead singer Matt James explains their commitment to authenticity: “When you come see us, you’re seeing rock and roll the way it used to be.” He emphasizes the band’s dedication to live performance, noting, “There are no laptops, no backing tracks. What you see is what you get.”
Currently on tour in the UK, Blacktop Mojo continues to build their reputation, bringing their gritty, energetic presence to stages across the world. Their blend of raw rock energy and genuine musicianship is earning them a growing fanbase, with no signs of slowing down.
