SZA recently took a moment to reflect on some difficult moments from her past, expressing gratitude for the journey that has led her to where she is now. The singer responded to a fan’s clip from early in the pandemic, which showed her quarantining at her childhood home in New Jersey and sharing a moment of excitement over some of her mother’s belongings.
In her retweet of the video, SZA opened up about the challenging period she was going through. “Covid was hard … my granny had just died … I was hella depressed n masking,” she wrote. “Not eating. Over working out. But I always had my childhood home to get lost in. Still do. Grateful to be in a much better mental space now. [heart emoji] s/o to those days tho.”
Since then, SZA’s career has soared, with the global success of her 2022 album SOS, which recently made a triumphant return to the top of the charts after the release of its 15-track deluxe edition, Lana, on December 20. The album, under the title SOS, sold 178,000 equivalent units last week, driven largely by the new deluxe tracks.
Had Lana been released as a separate project, it would have debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with 105,000 units sold — a figure surpassing Michael Bublé’s Christmas, which is currently at number two. This achievement marks the longest gap in history for an album returning to the top spot on the Billboard 200, as SOS first topped the charts 22 months ago.
The album has spent a total of 11 nonconsecutive weeks at number one and has never fallen out of the top 20 since its release.
In celebration of the ongoing success of SOS, SZA shared her appreciation with fans on Instagram Stories and wrote on X: “If it wasn’t for God’s favor over my life this year boyyy. My parents are healthy. Won 3 Grammys. Went number one again. Sang on Sesame Street. Shot a movie. Shot a Vogue cover. Toured the world. Got a Songwriters Hall of Fame award. WHO JAH BLESS NO MAN CURSE!! NO MAN!!! AMEN.”
