The Atlanta music scene is reeling from the loss of rapper OG Maco, who has passed away at the age of 32. Born Maco Mattox, OG Maco died Thursday night in Los Angeles after being hospitalized due to a severe gunshot wound to the head. Authorities suspect the wound may have been self-inflicted.
Maco’s family confirmed the tragic news via an Instagram post, remembering him as a resilient artist whose music left a profound impact. “With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco,” the statement read. “His life was a testament to resilience, creativity, and boundless love. Through his music, passion, and unwavering spirit, he touched so many lives and left a lasting impact.”
OG Maco rose to fame in 2014 with his viral hit “U Guessed It,” which led to a signing with Quality Control Music. Known for his high-energy, genre-blending style that mixed trap, punk, and experimental sounds, Maco’s influence on the music industry was undeniable. Despite facing numerous personal hardships, including a near-fatal car accident in 2016 that resulted in the loss of his eye and a battle with a severe skin condition in 2019, he continued to create and inspire.
In the days leading up to his death, Maco’s family had shared that he was in “critical but stable condition” and on life support. His manager, Poppa Perc, revealed that the rapper was undergoing treatment while plans for a new music project and rebranding were underway.
OG Maco’s family has expressed deep gratitude to his fans, saying, “To all of Maco’s fans, friends, and supporters: thank you for standing by him throughout his journey. Today, we celebrate a life that was extraordinary in every way.” His legacy, they said, “will remain forever etched in our hearts.”
