Global superstar Lisa, known for her success with Blackpink and her solo music and acting career, is the focus of a new documentary film. The project is being produced by Sony Music Vision and directed by Sue Kim. This announcement was made Thursday night.
The news came during a Sony Music Vision event in Hollywood. The event showcased several music film projects currently in production. Director Sue Kim spoke about her film on Lisa. Other directors, including Baz Luhrmann and Frank Marshall, also shared updates on their own projects. Luhrmann discussed his upcoming Elvis Presley documentary, while Marshall showed footage from his Barbra Streisand film.
Sue Kim said she worked with Lisa for a year on the documentary. There is no release date set yet. Kim has directed other films, such as “The Last of the Sea Women,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall. She also has experience in K-pop documentaries, having been an executive producer on Apple TV+’s docuseries “K-Pop Idols.”
At the event, a trailer for the Lisa documentary was shown. It included concert clips of Lisa performing solo and personal moments with her family. Kim shared that when she first met Lisa, the singer immediately contacted her old friends, wanting them to be part of the film.
Lisa said in a statement: “This has been such an incredible year. I’m lucky to capture these special moments on film and share them with my fans. Working with Sue Kim has been a joy. We’ve traveled the world together, and I believe this is just the start of many exciting things.”
Kim added, “Following Lisa through this transformative year has been an honor and a gift. There are many moments in her journey that will surprise people and show a side of her no one has seen before. I’m excited for viewers to watch and witness this extraordinary time in her life.”
The documentary is produced by Tremolo Productions, Salt Water Productions, and LLOUD CO. Producers include Morgan Neville and Caitrin Rogers for Tremolo, and Sue Kim and Courtney Crockett for Salt Water. Executive producers come from LLOUD CO., RCA Records, and Sony Music Vision. Sony Music Vision will distribute the film, partnering with RCA Records.
The documentary follows the recent release of Lisa’s debut solo album, “Alter Ego.” After Blackpink members took a year to focus on solo projects, the group is planning a short tour this year, with a longer reunion expected later. Lisa also made her acting debut in the latest season of “The White Lotus,” which will be covered in the documentary.
At the same event, Baz Luhrmann presented footage from his “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” film. The project blends concert and documentary styles. Luhrmann shared that he reviewed hours of unseen footage, including Presley talking about his life and performing from the 1950s to the 1970s. He showed a rough cut, which received positive feedback, even from those who were not Presley fans.
Sony Music Vision has produced several high-profile documentaries recently. These include Questlove’s film on Sly Stone and a remastered Pink Floyd concert film. The Pink Floyd film became the company’s highest-grossing theatrical release this spring.
