CHICAGO — For more than 30 years, a local record company has helped Chicago-based classical musicians reach audiences around the world. Now, it is giving one talented musician the chance to fulfill their dream of becoming a recording artist.
Cedille Records, a non-profit organization founded by James Ginsburg in 1989, has worked to promote classical musicians from Chicago. The company has helped put the city on the map as a hub for exceptional music. Over its three-decade history, Cedille Records artists have received 35 Grammy Award nominations and won eight Grammys.
In a recent interview with Sean Lewis on WGN’s Weekend Morning News, Ginsburg discussed Cedille Records’ mission and its Emerging Artists Competition. This contest gives lesser-known classical musicians the opportunity to earn a recording contract.
“We are the only label focused solely on promoting classical musicians from one metropolitan area — Chicago,” Ginsburg explained. “Our goal is to produce outstanding recordings with these musicians and use them to advance their careers and share their music worldwide.”
The finals of the Emerging Artists Competition will take place Sunday afternoon at the Spertus Institute, located at 610 South Michigan Avenue. Three finalists, all from Chicago, were selected from seven semifinalists who performed for a panel of judges on Saturday.
