Progressive death metal band Fallujah have unveiled their third single, “Step Through the Portal and Breathe,” from their upcoming album Xenotaph, which is set to be released on June 13 via Nuclear Blast Records.
In a statement about the new track, the band described it as a blend of their classic heavy sound with fresh elements. The nearly seven-minute song showcases intense death metal energy mixed with atmospheric layers, maintaining the distinctive style Fallujah has built over the past decade.
Guitarist Scott Carstairs delivers what the band calls his most intricate playing yet. Vocalist Kyle Schaefer explores the deeper range of his voice, and new guitarist Sam Mooradian makes a standout debut with a striking solo. “This track is a great representation of our new album Xenotaph, a total ripper, and definitely not one to sleep on,” the band added.
The new album, Xenotaph, is Fallujah’s sixth studio release. It is now available for pre-order in limited edition formats including vinyl, CD, and cassette.
Speaking about the album, Kyle Schaefer said:
“We are excited to finally reveal Xenotaph, the sixth chapter in our discography. This is our most ambitious record yet, and it’s certainly the most technical, dynamic, and progressive material we’ve ever written. The eight tracks carry a deep concept, telling a story that unfolds across layers of time and reality in a surreal, post-death world.
“This is also our most collaborative album so far. Everyone in the current lineup contributed to the songwriting, helping us expand our musical scope and bring out the full potential of each member. We hope fans will embrace this bold new stage of our journey.”
Fallujah’s evolution continues with Xenotaph, following the success of their previous album Empyrean (2022). That record received praise from outlets like Metal Injection, New Noise, and Guitar World. With the lineup slightly reshaped, the band now includes guitarist Sam Mooradian (Inhale Existence, Sam Mooradian) and drummer Kevin Alexander (Disembodied Tyrant, Brought By Pain), joining Carstairs, Schaefer, and bassist Evan Brewer.
Backed by earlier singles “Kaleidoscopic Waves” and “Labyrinth of Stone,” Xenotaph reflects a revitalized and reimagined Fallujah.
The album was produced by the band and engineered by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Archspire) and Mike Low (Vitriol, Aborted). Recording took place at Flatline Audio in Denver and Top Track Studios in Nashville. Otero also handled mixing and mastering. The production team aimed to build on Empyrean while pushing further—emphasizing clarity between the band’s complex rhythms, atmospheric melodies, and intense energy.
As they prepare to release Xenotaph, Fallujah are also ready to hit the road. Fans at recent shows have already heard new songs like “The Obsidian Architect,” which blends progressive elements with haunting themes. The band continues to push forward, showing no signs of slowing down.
