Alan Jackson Gets Major, Surprise Honor at ACM Awards

Country music legend Alan Jackson received a major surprise during the 60th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, held Thursday, May 8, in Frisco, Texas. Although fans expected Keith Urban to be honored and Alan Jackson to perform, what came as a surprise was that Jackson himself would be celebrated with a prestigious award — one that will now carry his name.

Alan Jackson became the first recipient of the newly established ACM Alan Jackson Lifetime Achievement Award, a title that honors his lasting impact on country music. The announcement was made shortly before his performance at around 8:30 p.m. Central Time.

Jackson began by performing his heartfelt song “Remember When”, while a montage of photos and videos from his career played on large screens behind him. The moment was deeply emotional. At one point, Jackson said, “Play that steel guitar. That’s real country music,” emphasizing his traditional country roots. Cameras caught audience members visibly moved, including artist Kaitlin Butts, who was seen with tears on her face.

After his performance, Jackson took the stage again to accept the award, expressing gratitude with humor and humility.

“Thank everybody so much. It’s quite an honor,” Jackson said. “A few years ago, one of my fans named their dog after me. I thought that was something. This is really… it’s amazing.”

He reflected on his journey, saying, “I came to Nashville with a paper sack full of songs and a crazy dream. And all these years later, I’m standing here receiving such an honor like this. It’s just mind-blowing.”

The ACM’s new lifetime achievement award mirrors a similar honor given by the Country Music Association — the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, first presented in 2012 to Nelson himself.

Jackson also thanked those who supported him along the way: “I thank God all the time for all the people who have been part of my life and career, who helped me get here and maintain this all this time.”

He made a special mention of his longtime partner: “But I especially want to thank my fans all over this country and all over the world. And I do want to especially thank one person who’s been my best friend since I was 17 years old. It’s my wife, Denise.”

Alan Jackson has previously revealed that he suffers from a neurological condition, which has limited his ability to tour. He is currently on his “Last Call: One for the Road” tour, with no set end date announced.

The 2025 ACM Awards offered a touching moment by recognizing Jackson’s legacy while he is still able to enjoy the applause. The award and performance served as a celebration of his lasting influence and his continued connection with country music fans.
