J-pop group f5ve (pronounced “fi-vee”) is making waves internationally, blending traditional Japanese pop with global sounds. Despite being relatively new, the five-member group boasts over a decade of experience in the music industry. Members Sayaka, Kaede, Ruri, and Miyuu (ages 28-29) previously performed in LDH Entertainment groups E-girls and Happiness, while 21-year-old Rui is still part of iScream under the same label.
Recently, f5ve has been honing their skills to reach wider audiences, focusing on English fluency and mastering the basics of recording and performing with microphones, a departure from typical J-pop groups where dancers often do not sing.
Unlike their past projects, f5ve is determined to create “Japanese pop music for an international audience,” aiming to challenge stereotypes about J-pop. “People abroad often associate J-pop with anime songs,” Kaede says. “While we do have anime songs, we also produce diverse and cool music.” Their debut album, SEQUENCE 01, produced by BloodPop (known for his work with Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga), showcases their unique sound, blending Tokyo rave beats, hyperpop, and J-pop with international influences.
The group is also leveraging social media to connect with their global fanbase. Miyuu says their social media presence is unique, noting, “Some people say our account seems unofficial. I think that’s what makes people so interested in us.”
Ahead of their album release, f5ve spoke to Billboard about their journey and aspirations.
