Lauryn Hill Lets Doechii Take Over Rap Duties During Live Performance of Doo Wop

by Patria

Lauryn Hill recently gave Doechii a special honor during a live performance of her hit song, “Doo Wop (That Thing).” At the Jazz in the Garden Music Festival in Miami Gardens, Florida, Hill invited the Florida rapper to join her on stage and perform the song’s second verse.

Hill introduced Doechii to the crowd, saying, “I want to introduce y’all to another sistah.” Doechii stepped in to rap the second verse with ease. After the performance, Doechii expressed her gratitude to Hill on social media, writing, “Thank you Miss Lauryn Hill. Thank you. My heart is so full. She is my hero. This is the greatest honor hip-hop could give me. Praise God. My entire body is vibrating with joy right now. I’ll never forget this day! EVER!” She also admitted feeling nervous, saying, “I’ve never been so nervous in my life, she is a QUEEN.”

Both Doechii and Hill share a significant achievement: they are among the only three women, alongside Cardi B, to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Doechii reflected on this milestone during her acceptance speech at this year’s Grammys, saying, “This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won — three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii!”

She added an inspiring message to her fans, especially Black women, stating, “I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now, and I wanna tell you — you can do it. Anything is possible, don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you… you are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.”
