Deadmau5 Sells Song and Label Catalog for $55 Million to Launch New Music Group

by Patria

Electronic music artist Deadmau5 has sold his song catalog and that of his Mau5trap label to Create Music Group for over $55 million, the company revealed on Wednesday. The deal includes the rights to more than 4,000 songs, along with a new partnership to release future music from Deadmau5 and Mau5trap.

As part of the agreement, Create Music Group (CMG) plans to develop a “multi-platform strategy.” This will involve remastering and re-releasing key songs, offering exclusive content, and using innovative marketing techniques to introduce Mau5trap’s legacy to new audiences. The collaboration will also explore licensing opportunities, brand partnerships, and emerging media such as gaming, virtual reality, and live streaming to boost revenue for the catalog.

Jonathan Strauss, CEO and co-founder of Create Music Group, commented: “When Deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didn’t just create a brand—he sparked a movement. His vision reshaped the electronic music industry. Alexandre Williams and I have worked alongside Joel and his partner Dean Wilson for years, and now, as stewards of his legendary catalog, we inherit a legacy that changed music. Joel’s influence goes beyond music, spanning gaming and technology, inspiring a new generation.”

Deadmau5 also shared, “I’ve worked with Jonathan, Alex, and Create for nearly two decades, growing my own career and that of the Mau5trap artists. When it came time to find a partner to take it to the next level, Create was the obvious choice. I believe the music will now reach more people.”

Legal advisors for the deal included Paul Hastings LLP, representing Create Music Group, and LaPolt Law P.C., representing Deadmau5 and Mau5trap.
