Lauryn Hill has shared a moving tribute to the legendary Roberta Flack, who passed away at 88 on February 26. In an emotional Instagram post, Hill reflected on Flack’s profound impact on her own music and artistry.
“Whitney Houston once said to me that Roberta Flack’s voice was one of the purest voices she’d ever heard,” Hill wrote. “I grew up scouring the records my parents collected, and Mrs. Flack quickly became one of my favorites.”
Hill praised Flack’s versatility, mentioning iconic tracks like Compared To What, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Ballad of the Sad Young Men. But it was Flack’s rendition of Killing Me Softly With His Song—originally recorded by Lori Lieberman in 1971—that left an indelible mark on Hill. Flack’s version, inspired by a chance encounter with the song on an airplane, became a chart-topping hit and won a Grammy in 1973.
