PinkPantheress, known for hits like “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2,” “Stateside,” and “Tonight,” has made a name for herself as a leading voice in electro-pop. But despite her polished pop sound, her personal taste in music leans in a different direction.
On May 10, the Grammy-nominated producer and singer surprised fans by revealing her deep love for rap music. While her previous collaborations with hip-hop artists like Ice Spice and Central Cee hinted at this interest, her top album pick still caught many off guard.
In an interview with Pitchfork for their My Perfect 10 series, PinkPantheress named Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly as her all-time favorite album. She admitted that her admiration for the project initially stemmed from a slightly snobbish mindset.
“It’s my favorite album because I remember thinking I was so far ahead intellectually because I enjoyed it,” she said. “Which is so funny because I probably actually wasn’t at all. But I remember listening to it, feeling cool because I was listening to it.”
She went on to explain that her connection to the album grew stronger with age. “As time went on, it struck more of a chord the older I got, because I was like, ‘Wait, I actually understand what he’s saying in these songs now.’”
PinkPantheress also laughed at her younger self. “These were my thoughts back then when I was a teenager,” she added, reflecting on how her perspective has evolved.
This isn’t the first time she has expressed admiration for Kendrick Lamar. In 2023, she shared a story about a failed attempt to work with the rapper in the studio, showing that her respect for his artistry runs deep.
