Fredericksburg, Texas, is drawing attention from classical music enthusiasts with its inaugural music festival, showcasing performances centered around the cello.
Joseph Kuipers, Creative Director of the Fredericksburg Music Festival, shared that the event will feature 13 concerts from June 8 to June 21 in various venues across the town. Some performances will take place in local wineries, while others will be held at historic sites like the Marienkirche, a church dating back to 1851, and St. Joseph’s Hall.
Known for its German heritage and scenic wineries, Fredericksburg is quickly becoming a hub for classical music. The festival aims to further enhance its reputation by combining public performances with intimate behind-the-scenes master classes.
“The first concert on Thursday will feature part one of ‘Bach and Bordeaux,’ presenting all six of Johann Sebastian Bach’s beloved cello suites,” Kuipers explained. “It will be held in a beautiful vineyard, with wine served before and after the performance.”
On Friday evening, attendees will hear Clive Greensmith, a renowned British cellist from the Colburn School and the Tokyo String Quartet. The concert will also feature Scott Tixier, a French jazz violinist who has won five Grammy Awards. Tixier, known for his collaborations with John Legend and his work on The Lion King soundtrack, will perform an improvised jazz set at Becker Vineyards.
The festival, which began on June 8, continues through June 21, offering a variety of workshops, master classes, and concerts.
This Saturday, Eunghee Cho, a professor in Houston, will perform with pianist Lindsay Garritson at St. Joseph’s Hall, offering a dynamic cello and piano program.
On Sunday, Ken Freudigman, principal cellist with the San Antonio Philharmonic, will take the stage. The festival will conclude with a cello choir performance, featuring iconic pieces such as Lord of the Rings and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
