SZA’s album SOS has set a new record by staying at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for 38 weeks. This breaks the previous record of 37 weeks, which was held by Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1983-84.
In the tracking week from May 23 to May 29, SOS earned 47,000 equivalent album units in the United States, according to Luminate. This number is a 2% increase compared to the previous week. So far, the album has spent 129 weeks on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Impressively, it has never fallen out of the top 10 during that time.
SOS is SZA’s second studio album. It was released in December 2022 as the highly anticipated follow-up to her 2017 debut album, Ctrl. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and produced hit singles such as “Kill Bill” and “Snooze.”
On December 20, SZA released SOS Deluxe: Lana, which added 15 new tracks to the original 22-song album.
Besides its success on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, SOS also spent 10 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It set a new record for the largest streaming week ever for an R&B album in the United States.
