Jennie of Blackpink is changing the way K-pop artists promote their music. With her debut solo album Ruby, she has released seven music videos for different tracks, setting a new record in the industry.
On Sunday, Jennie released the music video for her B-side track “Seoul City” through her official YouTube channel and social media accounts. This marks the seventh video she has released for Ruby, covering nearly half of the album’s 15 tracks. No other K-pop artist has done this before.
Usually, K-pop artists produce only two or three music videos, mainly for their lead singles, because of the high costs of production and promotion. Jennie’s decision to release so many videos sets a new standard for album promotion in K-pop.
“Seoul City” is a song that expresses Jennie’s deep love for Seoul. She took part in writing the lyrics and composing the track. In the song, she describes Seoul as the most precious place in her heart.
The music video shows Seoul’s dreamlike beauty. It captures Jennie enjoying the city’s vibrant atmosphere, which adds to the song’s nostalgic feeling.
Earlier this month, Jennie performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13 and 20. Coachella is one of the biggest music festivals in the United States. She made history by becoming the first solo K-pop artist to perform on the festival’s Outdoor Theatre stage.
Jennie has also achieved major successes with Ruby.
The album recorded the highest first-week sales for a female K-pop solo artist this year, selling 661,130 copies.
Three songs from the album — “Like Jennie,” “Handlebars” (featuring Dua Lipa), and “ExtraL” (featuring Doechii) — entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 22. Jennie became the first K-pop female soloist to have three songs chart at the same time.
Ruby also debuted at No. 3 on the UK Official Albums Chart. This is the highest position ever achieved by a female K-pop solo artist.
